How Keratin Works

If you want the sleekest, most manageable and frizz-controlled hair, there's only one word you need to know: KERATIN.  Keratin is the main protein of the hair, skin and nails. Keratin makes up to 91 percent of hair and contains 16 different amino acids, with cysteine being the most important one as it creates the sulfur bridges in hair that give it its internal strength.

If your natural keratin levels are low, your hair can appear dry, frizzy, dehydrated and damaged, which is where the man-made treatment comes in...  In fact, it even has the royal seal of approval and is loved by none other than Meghan Markle. According to Meghan's former hairstylist, Theonie Kakoulli at Nicky Clarke, it's the secret behind Meghan's sleek ends.

What is a Keratin Treatment?

A keratin treatment forms a coating over the hair to mimic smoothness and shine. But despite the name, keratin isn't the main ingredient.  Hair cannot accept more than around one per cent extra keratin in a treatment without losing the moisture-protein balance. This balance is essential for the hair to retain its strength, suppleness and malleability.  Therefore most keratin treatments use other sources of protein to repair the hair including corn, vegetable, soy and wheat.

However to really create that smooth, sleek and shiny finish, Kerastraight an in-salon professional keratin treatment, relies on more than just proteins.

Keratin Treatment Formulations 'Old' and 'New'

Earlier keratin treatments contained formaldehyde or methylene glycol, but were banned due to health and safety reasons.

People often associate keratin treatments with straightening, and while it does do this, modern formulas are based on rebuilding, repairing and strengthening the hair just as much. Ideal candidates are those with damaged, curly, frizzy or unruly hair; essentially anyone who doesn't enjoy their hairs natural shape and movement.

What to expect after a Keratin Treatment

Following treatment, care and styling of your hair becomes effortless with minimal amounts of blow drying and styling required for months afterwards, a major bonus for clients who find their hair too thick and therefore takes too long to style.

The shiny, glossy and lightweight result at the end of the treatment will remain for up to four to five months, or until the treatment naturally breaks down.  Your hair will have much improved resiliency and will no longer be affected by rain, humidity or sweat. This is the beginning of the end to frizzy hair.

Are there any downsides to having a Keratin Treatment?

SUCCESSFUL results of this hair treatment process DO depend on important factors such as the application process and effectiveness and longevity of the keratin treatment being used.  Different keratin treatments have different methods, so make sure you do your research on any other treatment or service offered.  Over time, the keratin will break down and the hair will return to its natural state.

What is the difference between a Brazilian Blow Dry and a Keratin Treatment?

The Brazilian blow dry has come on leaps and bounds since first coming to UK salons.

The Brazilian Blow Dry is the original name of the process and is also known as ‘Brazilian Hair Straightening’, ‘Permanent Blowdry’ ‘Keratin Hair Straightening’. A keratin treatment is what is used within the process. The application and methods will vary depending on which keratin treatment is used.

My Hair Story

I grew up with really difficult hair, it was extremely coarse and unmanageable.  After discovering keratin treatments 10 years ago I have never looked back, my hair has totally transformed and I can even lighten it now without it going into a frizz frenzy thanks to these treatments; I couldn't live without them!
