FAQ Brazilian Blowdry
WHAT IS A BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY?
A Brazilian Blowdry is the name of the process, which was originated in Brazil, a nation obsessed with having straight, frizz free hair. The keratin treatment I use within this process is an international brand with a presence in more than 30 countries. It is a semi-permanent keratin treatment which is rich in minerals and contains 0.2% formaldehyde and lasts between 4 to 5 months.
Please Note: The 'Brazilian Blowdry' technique has many variations and is known by several other names including Brazilian Blowout, Brazilian straightening and Brazilian Keratin Treatment and there are many different brands used under these names, so it can be confusing.
However SUCCESSFUL results of this hair treatment process DO depend on important factors such as the suitability of the treatment for the hair type and condition, the application process and effectiveness and longevity of the keratin treatment being used.
WHY SHOULD I OPT FOR THE BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY
Higher volume reduction; straightens rather than smooths, longer lasting results.
CAN I HAVE A BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY IF MY HAIR IS DAMAGED OR WEAK?
This treatment is NOT suitable for overexposed bleached damaged or weak hair or if the frizz is steaming from damage. Alternatively I would recommend the 'All-natural Keratin treatments' I offer to strengthen and repair the hair. If you are unsure about the condition of your hair, I do carry all the treatments with me and we can decide on the day which treatment is best for your hair and expectations.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY?
Your hair will be left frizz-free, shiny and manageable with plenty of bounce and movement with a high volume reduction. You can walk around on damp or humid days without worrying that your hair will frizz up. You will also notice that you are able to blow dry your hair in a fraction of the normal time. I do not guarantee ‘wash & go’ this will depend on your hair texture. After the initial 3 days post treatment, you have the option to curl or add waves to your hair.
WILL MY HAIR BE VERY STRAIGHT?
From experience clients opt for this treatment as it dramatically reduces and in most cases stops the need for using hair straighteners (depending on your hair type), thus allowing the hair to strengthen and grow.
The treatment really works with your hairs natural form and texture. For very curly resistant and/or mixed race hair it will minimize the frizz, especially in humidity and reduce volume, but I cannot guarantee straight hair on the first treatment. However, after 2 to 3 Brazilian Blowdry treatments, your hair will be straighter due to the accumulative coating of the product. Some Asian hair can be resistant; I'll be able to advise you accordingly based upon your hair on the day as from my experience my 'All-natural Keratin Treatments' can work just as well.
CAN I HAVE THIS TREATMENT WITH COLOURED HAIR?
Absolutely yes! I recommend that you have at least a 7 day gap between your Brazilian Blowdry treatment and colour service to avoid aggravating your hair.
WILL I LOSE HAIR VOLUME POST TREATMENT?
Yes this treatment does reduce a high amount of volume; clients with fine hair can opt for the all natural 'Keratin Treatments' I offer if they do not want to lose volume.
CAN I HAVE THIS TREATMENT IF I HAVE SHORT HAIR?
Yes, the hair has to be at least two inches long or more for the straightening process.
CAN I HAVE A BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY IF I HAVE HAIR EXTENSIONS?
‘Real hair’ extensions can be treated, however I advise against treatment for other extensions as they are specially treated by the manufacturer and very different to your real hair. Extensions must be removed before treatment and fitted again at least 7 days post treatment.
CAN I HAVE THIS TREATMENT IF MY HAIR HAS BEEN RELAXED OR CHEMICALLY STRAIGHTENED?
Yes, provided your hair has NOT been damaged by the relaxer or straightening product. The Brazilian Blowdry will enhance the look of your hair and give more movement. It is a great touch-up treatment if you've previously had Yuko Straightening to avoid over processing your hair with chemicals.
CAN I HAVE THE BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY IF I'M PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING?
No, however the 'All-natural Keratin Treatments' I offer are built on conditioners and proteins and are safe to use, but if you have any concerns please consult your GP.
CAN I GO SWIMMING AFTER HAVING A BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY?
Yes, but not for the first 3 days post treatment and you must have shampooed your hair before going swimming. The longevity of the treatment will be affected by continuous exposure to chlorine and/or sea water. You should use a professional sulfate free shampoo and use a quality conditioner after swimming regardless of whether you have a Brazilian Blowdry or not. I recommend Philip Kingsley swim cap hair mask before swimming.
CAN I USE ANY SHAMPOO POST TREATMENT?
No. You must use a professional sulfate free shampoo post treatment. I can recommend suitable shampoos and conditioners to suit different hair types.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
Between 2-3 hours from start to finish, depending on the length and thickness of your hair.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS DOING THE BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY?
During the treatment you may experience some eye watering (I do provide safety molded glasses) this is due to the vapors it produces during the drying process, this is why it's extremely important to have good ventilation by opening doors / windows especially in small confined spaces. If the weather permits this can be done in an outdoor area. It may sound like an intense experience but the results outweigh the negatives.
DOES THE BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY CONTAIN FORMALDEHYDE?
Yes it contains 0.2% formaldehyde
RESTRICTIONS FOR THIS TREATMENT
This treatment is not suitable for: Hair that has been damaged by aggressive chemicals; over-exposed to bleach; weak and/or damaged hair; hair treated with Henna; any scalp conditions such as scalp mycosis, psoriasis, and folliculitis.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A BRAZILIAN BLOWDRY AT HOME?
It is very simple if you wish to save time you can wash your hair with any clarifying shampoo (no conditioner) and let your hair dry naturally or blast dry before I arrive for the appointment. Alternatively I do carry the clarifying shampoo with me. We need to be in a room where there is plenty of ventilation (open doors or windows) for the vapor to escape, a table for my equipment and a chair for you to sit in comfortably... that's it!
